This is an example of a hydrostatic spindle designed for high speed grinding with CBN grinding wheels. The small bearing diameter in combination with high surface speed allows the use of CBN wheels even for undercuts in a camshaft application.

The hydrostatic spindles "float" on hydrostatic oil pads, resulting in an interface that is wear-free. As a result, the extremely good run-out and high stiffness characteristics of the spindle do not deteriorate over the life of the machine, regardless of the operating forces and speeds. The excellent damping and smooth operation of the roller-free bearing can be seen in the better workpiece finish quality and also because grinding wheels will stay sharp longer. Since the friction of the hydrostatic bearing is so low, over 95% of the motor power goes to the workpiece and the spindle temperature will increase less than 10 degrees C, even at maximum force and speed. In addition, bearing pre-stress, unbalance, and cutting force can be directly measured by monitoring the hydrostatic pocket pressure.

The hydrostatic lathe and grinding machine spindles are suitable for applications on horizontal or vertical machines. They are available for belt-drive, direct drive, or as a motor spindle.

Hydrostatic Lathe Spindles
Hydrostatic Lathe Spindles

- Very low friction will heat the spindle only slightly. Nearly all motor power gets to the workpiece. Heat that is generated is moved immediately out of the spindle area with the oil and cooled in the chiller. - No vibration from roller bearings for extremely smooth operation. - Excellent damping of vibration during grinding process, resulting in superior surface finish and workpiece accuracy. In addition, grinding wheels will stay sharp longer.

Axial Collet Clamping Grippers for HSK 100 Grinding Wheels
Axial Collet Clamping Grippers for HSK 100 Grinding Wheels

The AZS gripper is specially designed to manually mount heavy grinding wheels to a standard HSK 100 tool interface. The grinding wheel is mounted onto a HSK-style tool holder and is held to the spindle extremely accurately. The gripper allows very high clamping forces in a compact design. For example, the clamping force is 55 kN with a clamping torque of only 30 Nm for HSK 100. If needed, this AXS-100 gripper could be adapted for any HSK standard.

Hydrostatic Center Bearings
Hydrostatic Center Bearings

- Only one radial bearing - Moment and axial forces are carried by an axial bearing - Integrated clamping piston and rotating oil union for a hydraulic collet. The clamping piston is driven with hydrostatic oil and released with springs. - Extremely minimal friction (results in minimal warming during continuous operation, and more of the motor drive force applied to the workpiece).
